  1. Reading from left to right and then back to the central focus, my eye is pleased by the quick colour rush in bright contrast, the soft curving lines, the shortened depth of field suggesting more butterflies. You know what elements to include in the frame and what to exclude: no butterfly actually visible and yet I get the sense of seeing the entire insect. A part thrust at me gives me a whole. Creative move, Heather. Judgement of art is more primal than we like to believe; it's not a high-level decision but one that is rooted in basic sensory processes. I like the feel of the sensory play here.
I also like the descriptive phrase "mud puddling for mineral salts", but I have no idea what it really means. Urban butterflies "mud puddle" too? Sounds like fun. Your sheer enjoyment of nature shines in this photo.

    1. It's really amazing to see, these butterflies gather in great clusters on the dirt road and siphon mineral salts from the ground. I've seen about 15 in one group. Apparently it's called mud puddling. When they sense vibrations in the ground of something approaching too closely they all take flight in a great swirl of wings. It's fascinating.
