Monarch butterfly.

  1. A richly beautiful photo and in colour! Strong visual pull here as my eye is quickly drawn to the yellow spot, to the butterfly sitting in a field of green. Where you place the subject in the frame determines how we read the image - here it is horizontal, left to right along a mid plane. Always mindful of your elements, you balance the frame rather artfully by remembering the "rule" of thirds. By placing the subject in the first third of the left side of the frame, in dominant colour and using short depth of field, there is a feeling here of potential or implied movement, more tension. By balance, I mean if one element has significant pull, then it needs to be balanced by something else, even negative space. Space that is not subject matter directs the eye to the subject, giving the eye room to move which makes the photo more dynamic. Always thinking about the experience of the viewer, you never trap my eye. If the subject had been placed in the center, there would be little exploration for the eye to do. Whew! I do go on sometimes. Suffice to say, Heather, it's a beautiful shot. I do so enjoy your work.

    1. Yes, it's in colour. Sometimes colour even enhances a picture (shock, horror).

And I should get extra credit for taking this photo with crazy Murdoch at the end of the leash looped around my wrist. :)
