Sunset in the woods 2.

  1. A remarkably beautiful and arresting image, Heather - bright sun, yellow rays emerging, shadows playing on the ground, straight lines, symmetry. It reads in a very compelling way. Our eye is automatically pulled into the shiny sun and then it flows from top to bottom, making the image 3 dimensional by initially moving the visual experience from back to front and then from front to back. This in and out motion is pleasing to the eye and we spend some time looking at the attractive photo. We pause in our stroll through the hall of the gallery.
Bringing your entire attention to the natural subject, you see nature with your whole being, with what some call "second eyes". It is as if the setting, for you, is newly arrived. Your nature photographs direct what we will see, direct us to organize our minds and to integrate our experience of the world, to find meaning - the power to be involved with such concepts as goodness, as beauty, as truth. Significantly, your photos encourage us to believe that we are indeed part of nature. That's very important for we are now capable of destroying, in one way or another, the entire planet. Your language of nature is not mathematical but lyrical - perhaps the most effective way to talk about nature. Your art, therefore, can transform the way we think and feel, can connect us to both the beauty and the authority of nature. It's quite simple, Heather; we need your art.
